Wetlands Day
Wetlands Day is a special event at the UNFCCC COP that zooms in on wetlands & climate change. It will enable constructive, solution-focused discussions on the impact of wetland loss on climate change and possibilities to stop this. We will bring together speakers from science, governments, NGO’s, financial institutions and private businesses to discuss opportunities. There will be special attention for lessons learned from on the ground community based demonstration projects.

Swamps, mangroves, estuaries, lakes. Wetlands are known for their rich biodiversity and for providing millions of people with fresh water and food. However, wetlands also belong in the climate change debate, storing huge amounts of carbon in peat layers and mitigating the impact of extreme weather. Peatland loss in South-east Asia is already leading to carbon dioxide emissions of a magnitude of 8% of all global fossil fuel emission.
Preliminary agenda:
-
Introduction: wetlands and climate change
-
Managing the carbon stocks of Indonesian peatswamps
-
Linking development aid to avoiding emissions
-
Peatlands in avoided deforestation - actions for UNFCCC and World Bank
-
Options for financing the protection of peatland’s carbon stocks
-
Community based peatswamp restoration in Kalimantan
-
Peatlands, palm oil and CO2 tools
-
Win-wins in improved management of pulp plantations on peat
-
Role of wetlands in climate change adaptation.
-
Role of coastal wetlands in adaptation to extreme weather: field experiences
