GEF East Java Project

Project Objective:

To demonstrate a modular approach (i.e., small-scale sanitation with local treatment) to consult wastewater collection systems using cost-effective technology and community participation. The demonstration effect of the GEF intervention in East Java would be extremely valuable and easily replicated, and owing to its modular approach, would be open to funding from different financiers.

Project Activities:

  1. Demonstrate cost-effective community-based sewerage systems for residential wastewater
  2. Build capacity among provincial and local governments related to strategic planning, management and maintenance of wastewater services
  3. Develop policy reforms, including pricing and cost recovery for water, wastewater and other services

Liaoning Environment Project

Project Objective:

To enhance institutional  development activities, which will address the key regulatory, management, and planning issues that impact sustainability of the physical investments in pollution control activities in strategic "hotspots" close to the Bohai Sea. The lessons learned from these institutional innovations will be disseminated nationally and locally, and the potential for replication within Liaoning and other places in China is promising.

Project Activities:

  1. Improve utility regulation and management throughout the province
  2. Contribute to planning and investment in pollution control infrastructure in 9 project cities
  3. Demonstrate new approaches in solid waste management
  4. Mitigate industrial pollution within the context of overall waste management
