The core mandate of the UN/ISDR Asia & Pacific includes awareness-raising activities in disaster risk reduction, including the promotion of the World Disaster Reduction Campaign and the annual UN Sasakawa Award for Disaster Reduction, advocacy through policy formulation, the dissemination of guidelines to assist in the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA), promote the establishment of national platforms for disaster risk reduction, enhance networking and partnership-building to contribute to an effective culture of safety and protection of all communities in the Asia and Pacific Islands region.
Asia Pacific Water Forum
At Fourth World Water Forum (4th WWF), regional documents coordinated by Japan Water Forum (JWF) and 5 sub-regional coordinators (Korea Water Forum, Global Water Partnership (GWP) South East Asia, GWP South Asia, GWP CACENA and the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC)) together with regional water stakeholders reported on the Asia-Pacific region’s formidable water related challenges. These include the need for increased access to improved water supplies and sanitation through investments in infrastructure and capacity building, the protection and restoration of river basins as the fundamental provider of freshwater resources through Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), and the need to drastically reduce the vulnerability of human populations to water-related disasters.

Pacific Disaster Center
PDC is an applied science, information and technology center, working to reduce disaster risks and impacts to peoples' lives and property. PDC applies its expertise to seamlessly integrate various technologies for Disaster Management (DM) support in the Asia Pacific and Indian Ocean regions and beyond. The Center supports customers' DM requirements by providing timely, accurate, and relevant informational and analytical products in times of emergencies. PDC is also engaged in capacity building projects around the world—providing support and training regarding data and information management, decision and policy support, applications development, and information systems engineering.
Humanitarian Early Warning System (HEWS)
The Inter-Agency Standing Committee Humanitarian Early Warning Service (IASC-HEWS web) is an inter-agency partnership project aimed at establishing a common platform for humanitarian early warnings and forecasts for natural hazards. The main objective of HEWSweb is to bring together and make accessible in a simple manner the most credible early warning information available at the global level from multiple specialized institutions.

EM-DAT : the International Disaster Database
Emergency Events Database - EM-DAT. EM-DAT is information portal which aims to rationalise decision making for disaster preparedness, as well as providing an objective base for vulnerability assessment and priority setting. EMDAT contains essential core data on the occurrence and effects of over 12,800 mass disasters in the world from 1900 to present. The database is compiled from various sources, including UN agencies, non-governmental organisations, insurance companies, research institutes and press agencies.
Natural Disaster Preparedness and Education for Sustainable Development
This publication provides details of the development of culturally appropriate and locally relevant educational materials for natural disaster preparedness that target key stakeholder groups and integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) principles and strategies. Lessons learned by four in-country project teams, namely the Maldives, Thailand, Indonesia and India, and two collaborating organizations, the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and the Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU), while developing materials in collaboration with community groups in the Asia-Pacific region, are documented. This publication prepared under the Japanese Funds-in-Trust funded “Education for Natural Disaster Preparedness in Asia-Pacific within the context of Education for Sustainable Development” project provides insights into effective techniques for developing locally relevant educational materials, and highlights some of the challenges in that field.
