PEMSEA E-Updates is a FREE online newsletter distributed by the GEF/UNDP/IMO Regional Programme on Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA). The newsletter aims to promote information sharing among individuals and institutions involved in coastal and marine environment protection and management.

E-Updates Vol. 9 Issue No. 6

In this issue: The Philippines takes a big step forward for ICM Implementation through activities related to EO 533 implementation. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has been spearheading the development of a national ICM program in support of EO 533 implementation. The 2nd East Asian Seas Partnership Council meeting, held in Tokyo, Japan, on 14-17 July, looked into several important issues, such as PEMSEA’s legal personality, GEF/UNDP/UNOPS Project on the Implementation of the SDS-SEA, the EAS Congress 2009, and subregional transboundary projects. Other updates include: RO Korea’s hosting of the Twinning Secretariat; Strategic Partnership among the GEF, The World Bank, UNDP and PEMSEA explores investments in pollution reduction in a recent workshop; PEMSEA, HP Philippines launches the EAS Congress 2009 Regional Photo Contest and Puerto Galera opens its Sewage Collection and Treatment System Project to Build-Transfer Tendering. In Partner news: Plymouth Marine Laboratory announces Chief Executive Appointment and NOWPAP Regional Activity Centers set its new activities.

E-Updates Vol. 9 Issue No. 5

In this issue, SCOTIA recognizes PEMSEA’s contribution to coastal tourism during the Sustainable Coastal Tourism Conference held on 28 May in Manila. The recognition was for PEMSEA’s continuous support in promoting coastal tourism through its Public-Private Partnership initiatives for the development of adequate infrastructure for sanitation in Puerto Galera, Philippines. Also in this issue: Thua Thien Hue province in Vietnam initiates replication of Danang’s ICM project experience; Guimaras aims high towards achieving its sustainable development targets; Xiamen gears up for 2008 World Ocean Week (XWOW); the State of the Coasts evaluates ICM implementation on the ground, and the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources and PEMSEA announce that Manila, Philippines will be the site of the EAS Congress 2009. PEMSEA also welcomes new staff to the PEMSEA Resource Facility. In Partner News: NOWPAP strengthens links with partners; and USAID’s SCOTIA Project shares lessons learned.

In this issue, we give tribute to Dr. Chua Thia-Eng who retires on 31 December 2007 as Regional Programme Director of PEMSEA after more than 13 years of service at PEMSEA. We also feature the recent PMO Directors and NFPs Workshop held in Manila, Philippines, in December 2007 and two projects funded by the Small Grants Programme-PEMSEA Joint Communiqué: one in Stung Hav district, Sihanoukville, Cambodia, and another led by ANAK-Balayan in Batangas Province, Philippines, as well as several other events.

In this issue: PEMSEA inaugurates its new office building at the DENR compound, in Quezon City, Philippines; the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources and PEMSEA launches the Manila Bay Area Environmental Atlas; the Third Twinning Workshop on Ecosystem-based Management of Interrelated River Basins, Estuaries and Coastal Seas held in Tianjin, PR China. Also in this issue are articles on the Joint Meeting of the Batangas Bay Region Environmental Protection Council and the Provincial Solid Waste Management Board; the eight-day training workshop on rapid appraisal held in Lao People’s Democratic Republic; the 12th Intergovernmental Meeting of the NOWPAP; the launch of the Philippines Midterm Progress Report on the MDGs; and PEMSEA’s new intern from the Danang ICM Project Management Office in Vietnam.

In this issue, we bring you news and photos of the recent coastal cleanup activities in Batangas Province and Manila Bay (Philippines) as part of the 22nd Annual International Coastal Cleanup. In Vietnam, 23 local governments from eight countries across the East Asian Region convened in the 2007 Forum of the PEMSEA Network of Local Governments for Sustainable Coastal Development (PNLG). Policy reform, sustainable financing and investment for pollution reduction are the focus of the Twinning Workshop in Tianjin, PR China this October.

In this issue, read about: The First Partnership Council Meeting conducted in Manado City, Indonesia, last 17-20 July, which was participated in by 11 State Partners and 11 non-State Partners; the forthcoming Executive Committee Meeting on 14–15 September at the PEMSEA Office, in Manila, to discuss the decisions and actions required by the EAS Partnership Council; and the new PEMSEA Partners the International Ocean Institute (IOI) and the Swedish Environmental Secretariat for Asia (SENSA) which were officially introduced and welcomed during the Partnership Council Meeting. Other news include: the State of the Coasts Reporting; Stakeholder Consultation and Formulation of SDS-SEA Work Program for Timor-Leste; the 2007 PNLG Forum in Danang; the IW Conference where the GEF/World Bank/UNDP/PEMSEA Strategic Partnership was recognized; and an article from the EAS Youth Network’s Cris Evert Lato.
