As a regional partnership between 11 countries in East Asia, PEMSEA has been helping governments to develop coastal strategies and implement integrated coastal management (ICM) for over two decades at sites across the region.
PEMSEA offers Advisory Services to its national and local government partners addressing critical coastal sustainable development issues aligned with international targets and agreements in the areas of:
- Natural and Man-made Hazard Prevention and Management
- Food Security and Livelihood Management
- Water Use and Supply Management
- Pollution and Waste Reduction Management
- Habitat Protection, Restoration and Management
Working with all levels of government, from national ministers down to the local community, PEMSEA provides services tailored to each country's unique needs with an emphasis on local ownership. Through the PEMSEA Network of Local Governments (PNLG), local governments can collaborate with key stakeholders across the region including research and scientific institutions, companies and other important coastal management organizations. Through its Facilitation and Secretariat Services, PEMSEA assists governments in developing effective dialogue with stakeholders through key regional events like the East Asian Seas Congress.
Countries can access PEMSEA’s two decades of learning through its Knowledge Services, including capacity building workshops, special skills training, study tours and a library of policy briefs, case studies and technical resources on coastal and marine strategy and management.
PEMSEA helps governments to track critical coastal management indicators and develop a State of Coasts Report for their coastline. Governments looking to further validate their coastal management programs can do so through PEMSEA's Certification Services. As internationally-recognized standards, PEMSEA's ICM System Certification and Port Safety, Health and Environmental Management (PSHEM) System Certification can provide recognition and assurance to investors and other stakeholders of proper coastal governance.
As PEMSEA looks to expand coverage of integrated coastal management to 25% of East Asian coasts by 2021, we welcome the opportunity to assist governments in developing and implementing strategies supporting healthy and resilient coasts and economies in the region.
