Dili Municipality, Timor-Leste

Dili Municipality is located in the north coast of-Timor Leste, bordered by the municipalities of Liquica in the west, Manatuto in the east, and Aileu in the south. It consists of the National capital Dili and 6 Subdistricts of Nain Feto, Vera Cruz, Dom Aleixo, Cristo Rei, Metinaro (all coastal) and Atauro Island. As of 2010, it had a population of 234,026. Dili Municipality covers a total land area of 367.05 km2, and has a total coastline of 102.36 km (including 46.28 km for mainland Dili plus 56.08 km for Atauro island).

The areas of Tasitolu, Hera and Metinaro in the Dili district are part of a coastal wetlands network of mudflat and mangrove habitats in the north coast of Timor-Leste. Small patches of coral line the coast. A 50.85 ha marine protected area has been established along part of Atauro Island, containing seagrass, coral reefs, mangroves, and seashore. PEMSEA and Dili District are collaborating on development and implementation of an ICM program, to demonstrate how management effectiveness of MPA can be enhanced through through ICM.
