Leting (Laoting) city, with a population of a half million, covers a coastline of 98 km. Main economic activities include agriculture, industry, tourism and fisheries. There are several islands such as Shijiutuo Island, which are important tourism destinations in Hebei.

The inter-tidal zone is a source of various shellfish production including clams and scallop. There are provincial marine nature reserves in the south of Shijiutuo Island with a total area of 3,775ha. Recognizing the importance of the marine industry, the local government established a series of policies for promoting the development plan and marine functional zoning of Leting.
