Hailing Island, the biggest among 40 islands in Yangjiang city, is the focus area of the Yangjiang ICM program. Key economic activities in Hailing Island are tourism, fishing and aquaculture. The pressure for aquaculture development caused a significant loss of mangrove habitat. The UNDP-funded ICM project in Hailing Bay focused on building local capacity for marine environmental monitoring, enhancing fishery resources through artificial fishing reef and the establishment of a fishery resources protection zone, establishment of waste water treatment plants, etc. Continuous efforts are being made to address the fisheries resources depletion after the completion of the project, such as setting up additional fishing reefs, establishing more natural protection zones, mangrove planting, application of no-fishing season, and the reduction of fishing vessels.
