Vietnamese Interns Join PEMSEA's Professional Upgrading Program

Quezon City, Philippines — As part of the Professional Upgrading Program for 2010, PEMSEA welcomes Dr. Le Xuan Tuan and Mr. Nguyen Cong Minh of Viet Nam to the PEMSEA Resource Facility.

 

Dr. Tuan is connected with the Research Institute for Management of Seas and Islands under the Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands (VASI) where he does work on sustainable development, environmental management and coastal zone management related research. He was Vice Director/Lecturer and Researcher for the Mangrove Ecosystem Research Centre (MERC) under the Hanoi National University of Education. He has written a number of publications related to mangrove conservation, development and management in the context of climate change adaptation. He holds a doctorate in Coastal Environmental Science and a Master's degree in Ecology. Mr. Minh is the Acting Head of the Integrated Coastal Management Division of the Marine and Coastal Planning and Studies Centre of VASI. As Acting Head, he develops and implements programs and projects on ICM and coastal and marine sustainable management at both the national and local levels and provides support to provinces in developing their own ICM programs. Previously, he was the Biodiversity Officer for the IUCN-World Conservation Union in Hanoi for seven years, focusing on the implementation of the Convention of Biological Diversity. He holds a Master's degree in Ecology and Bachelor's degrees in Biology and English. Dr. Tuan and Mr. Minh will be with the PRF in the Philippines from August to November 2010 mainly work on on ICM Scaling up and ICM program initiation in priority provinces and cities in Viet Nam. They will also be working on preparing a roadmap for capacity development in support of a five-year ICM program. The PRF also hopes to maximize their expertise through the conduct of presentations and sharing sessions within the PRF and with other partners, and more importantly, help strengthen the collaboration between the PRF and VASI in scaling up ICM implementation in Viet Nam.
