The National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea (MABIK) is a legal entity established by the government of RO Korea for the purpose of research, education and exhibition in the field of marine bio-resources. MABIK recognizes marine bio-resources as national assets and conducts marine biodiversity-related research using government funds to support priority issues such as the conservation of marine biodiversity, restoration and multiplication of endangered species through genetic technologies, search and rescue of marine animals and management of invasive species.

IPIECA is the global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues. IPIECA was formed in 1974 following the launch of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The Ocean Policy Research Institute was established as the "Japan Foundation for Shipbuilding Advancement" in 1975. The Action Plan for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Northwest Pacific Region (NOWPAP) was adopted in September 1994 as a part of the Regional Seas Programme of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
